Scorpions Glowing in the Light - Black Light that is…

March 10th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Scales And Tails

Scales and Tails entertainer Jeremy Westerman presented a great workshop on Scorpions last month.  We learned about different types of Scorpions, their habitats, how to search for them in the wild, and that they glow under a black light.  We got an up close and personal….sometimes too personal (in the mouth!) look at some scorpions and then we went on a hunt all over the shop trying to find some painted scorpions!  It was really fun and we have the pictures to prove it.  Take a look!

Monitor Lizards are COOL!!

January 22nd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Scales And Tails

January was Monitor month!  Owner, Shane Richins, holds a deep fondness for Monitor lizards.  At this workshop we got to learn all about the cousins of the Komoto Dragon.  We started out with the baby monitor lizards and worked our way up to the adults.  Some of you that came last year, got to see how big some of our last year’s babies have gotten.  “Bug” for instance has tripled in size since last year!!  We learned which monitor lizards make good pets and which ones do not.  Afterwards, we played Pin-the-Tail on the Monitor and then got to watch Zig Zag and Bug eat a whole bunch of really gross stuff like cockroaches, raw meat, raw eggs, and dead fish!!  Take a look at all the fun below:

Here gator gator gator….

Back in December we had the wonderful opportunity to meet “DARTH GATOR”!  Darth Gator is Scales & Tails’ newest addtion, and if you haven’t guessed it already… he is an Alligator!   December’s reptile workshop was all about crocodillians, their habitats, live styles, warning & mating calls, and many other fun facts.  Our special guest, Shane Provostggard, came to give us expert information on the topic. Shane is the former supervisor over the reptile program at the Hogle Zoo.  Afterwards, we got to practice making gator noises and making the “water dance”!   Special thanks goes out to Shane Provostggard for coming out that night!

December’s Workshop is Swarming with Gators!!

December 2nd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Scales And Tails

Our December workshop is going to be AMAZING!! This month we are focusing on CROCODILLIANS!

Scales & Tails recently obtained a permit to legally own an Alligator. We went through all the red tape and were able to acquire a baby alligator that we will raise and use in our shows. Our focus this month will be on these fantastic creatures, where they are from, what they eat, and also on how bad of pets they can be.

We will be having special guest, Shane Provostggard, who was the former head supervisor over the reptile program at Hogle Zoo for many years, come in and share his experiences with us. He was able to work with several different kinds of crocodillians as well as the famous White Alligator that stayed at the Hogle Zoo last year!

This will be a great workshop and will be sure to have a super cool activity for the kids!

Come out to Scales and Tails Thursday, December 10th at 7:00pm. Bring your family and friends and get ready for a really exciting night!

Date: Thursday, Dec. 10th

Time: 7:00pm

Place: 152 W. Burton Ave, Ste. F, SLC, UT (Scales & Tails showroom)

How do YOU catch lizards??

November 20th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Events, Scales And Tails

November’s public workshop was so cool!  One of Scales & Tail’s entertainers, Jeremy Westerman, came and taught us all about finding cool things in the wild, like skulls, skins, bugs, and reptiles!  We talked about how sometimes its ok to take things we find out in the wilderness home and other times it is better to leave what we find, right where we found it.  Jeremy reminded us to take a camera with us so that if we find something cool that we can’t take home (because it is prohibited by law or because it just might not make a good pet) that we can still take a picture of it to remember it later!  Afterwards we had to practice researching about cool stuff we find in the wild and then we learned how to catch lizards using a 50 cent dowel and some dental floss!  It was a great night and I’m looking forward to next month already!  I hear it will be on Crodillians…
