April Workshop – “Venom Night”

Spring is here is that means the Rattlesnakes are waking up too! Come learn about rattlesnakes and other venomous creatures found here in Utah! Camp Theme: “Reptile Wrangling”

Your child will help our Scales & Tails guide learn how to properly handle snakes, lizards, and tortoises. Child will learn about proper handling techniques, correct habitats, and safe feeding procedures for each species of reptile. A simple snack of crackers, fruit and a juice box will be provided each day. Camp T-Shirt will also be included.

Youth Two Day Camps – Monday & Tuesday

9am – 12pm – Kindergarten – Third Grade – $100/child
1pm – 4pm – Fourth Grade – Sixth Grade – $100/child

Teen Two Day Camps – Wednesday & Thursday

9am – 12pm  – For 12 -15 years old – $100/teen

Details:

* Minimum of 4 participants needed to make the camp run.
* Maximum of 15 participants per camp session.
* $25 deposit required with application (refund available if camp does not run).
* Remainder of payment is due one week prior to camp start date. Check or Credit Card accepted.
* $20/hr child care fee for children not picked up with in 15 minutes of conclusion of camp each day.

Monday Night Family Night 5pm-8pm:

• We open our shop up to the public every Monday night (except Holidays) to come in and see and touch some of the coolest reptiles on the planet!! Public hours are from 5pm to 8pm. Every hour and half hour we will showcase a new cool animal and then spend the time between to allow the public to touch and/or hold animals, take pictures, and ask our expert reptile keepers questions. At 7pm we will do a feeding for the public to watch (animals we feed will vary per week). Shop is located at 3584 S. 1950 W., #13, WVC, UT in the KDA business park.Entrance Fees: $5/adult, $3/child (3-12yrs), Children 0-2 yrs Free, $3/Seniors 65+ See Calendar.

Saturday Safari 10am – 12pm:

• We open our shop up to the public every Saturday Morning (except Holidays) to come in and see & touch some of the coolest reptiles on the planet!! Public hours are from 10am – 12pm. Throughout the morning we will introduce new animals and then spend some time to allow the public to touch and/or hold animals, take pictures, and ask our expert reptile keepers questions. Workshops for Kids:

• Once a month we hold a workshop for kids that focuses on a specific new topic. We post details of  the topic of the month on our calendar, on our Workshop page, and on our Facebook Page under Events.  Workshops are typically held around the 3rd Wednesday of each month (pending any holidays or major events) and are held from 6:30-8:00pm.  The first half of the workshop is informative while the second half we have an activity for the kids.  Cost is $5/child.  Reptile Rookies are free. January Workshop – “Monitor Lizards”

Come learn about the cousins of the Komodo Dragon! Meet Hydro, TNT, Mr. Grumpy Pants, Daniel, Zig Zag, Bug, and Spaz in this cool workshop about Monitor Lizards! We’ll find out about where they live, what they like to eat and how they survive in the wild! Afterwards, we’ll get a chance to feed some of these amazing creatures! You won’t want to miss it!

October Workshop – “Creepy Crawlers”

Reptiles Rookies!!  (The spooky edition…)

As fitting for Halloween, we are going to be talking about “Creepy Crawlers”!! That’s right we’ll be talking about spiders, scorpions, cockroaches and millepedes! Learn about different kinds of creepy crawlers, where they live, how they hide, how they protect themselves, and many other cool and interesting facts about those creatures that give some people the “heebeegeebees”! After the presentation we are going to do a glow in the dark scorpion hunt and a little bit of “trick or treating” as well. Come dressed in your Halloween Best to receive candy prizes!

Camp Themes:
“Mystery of the Missing Monitor” – Help Scales & Tails guide Drew Webb find the missing Monitor at the Mysterious Scales & Tails Headquarters. Child will have fun doing activities and projects that will help them search for and hopefully find the Missing Monitor!
A simple snack of crackers, fruit and a juice box will be provided each day. Camp T-shirt will also be included.

Chelonians and the Hare

This month we are focusing on Chelonians!!  For those of you who are new to the reptile world, Chelonians are Turtles, Tortoises, and Terrapins.  These are truly amazing creatures and we are going to take a closer look at where they live, what they eat and whether or not they can really come out of their shells!  Also, for the first time in 3 years, we’ve finally been able to hatch a couple Redfoot Tortoises of our own! You will be some of the first people to get to see the babies up close and personal!  Oh!!  And don’t forget the race!!  Our annual Tortoise & the Hare race will be up for grabs.  The first year the Tortoise won, then last year the Hare won.  Who do you think will win this year for the tie breaker???  You will have to come to find out!

**Please note that this will be our last Reptile Rookie night in our current shop.  Next month we will be moved into our new location.**

March is Dinosaur Month!!

Boy do we have a workshop for March!!  We are going to dive into ancient reptiles this month and focus on Dinosaurs!!  We have a special guest speaker who is a real live paleontologist, Dr. Paul Bybee! Among other degrees, Dr. Bybee has a Ph.D. in Zoology with specializations in Vertebrate Paleobiology and Evolutionary Biology from Brigham Young University, emphases in statistics and mathematics. Dr. Bybee’s interests are basically Dinosaurian in nature. The aspects of how evolution has shaped the life on earth is of prime importance to Dr. Bybee’s research. Dr. Bybee works with some of the best scientists in the field of dinosaur paleontology. Many of the projects include: work on bone histology and evolution in conjunction with Dr. John Horner, who is the main advisor to the “Jurassic Park” movies. Dr. Bybee is also a consultant to the BBC’s “Walking with Dinosaurs” and has appeared in some of the episodes.

After Dr. Bybee’s presentation we will get a chance to dig for dinosaur bones!!  This is going to be so cool you won’t want to miss it!
