Erik’s lifelong interest in reptiles began at a very young age when his mother taught him to properly identify venomous snakes, then turned him lose to catch all the snakes and lizards he wanted. Being a military brat, Erik grew up in six different states and two foreign countries, and as a result he has no idea where he is from. Erik's interest in biology persisted and led to him obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Biology from BYU. In addition to Scales and Tails Erik also works as a Serpentologist making rattlesnake anti-venom.
