Zookeeper for a Day

Zookeeper Program for Youth ages 6 – 16:
Does your child have a passion for animals?  Would he or she love to have a chance to work behind the scenes?  Then this is the opportunity they have been waiting for!  Every Tuesday we will allow up to 6 children or teens to come in and be zookeepers for a couple hours prior to our Public Hours.  Participants will get the opportunity to help our staff, clean animal enclosures, prepare meals and feed the animals, learn reptile husbandry and simple vet care, handle animals that the general public typically does not get to work with and receive special training on how to deal with reptiles in the wild.  Zookeeper duties will vary week to week so each session will not be the same.
Cost will be $35/child.  Zookeeper time frame: 3 hours.  (Tuesdays: 8:30am – 11:30am)
Space limited to 6 participants per session.  Children can book multiple sessions.
Participants will receive a Scales & Tails Zookeeper T-Shirt

  • Maximum of 6 participants per keeper session
  • $35 participant fee
  • Participant must fill out registration form and liability waiver prior to participation

  • Participants may sign up for multiple sessions (must repeat registration for each date)

New Public Hours for the Winter 2015-2016

Attention Scales & Tails Patrons:

As of November 16th, we will be reducing our Monday and Wednesday hours. They will now be 4pm – 8pm until Spring. (With exception, we’ll be open the following Holiday dates for normal hours 12pm – 8pm on: 12/2, 12/21, 12/23, 12/28, 12/30, 1/6, 1/18, 2/3 and 2/15)

Due to a decline in business during school hours we have decided to make this change. If this inconveniences you in any way, please call (801) 577-7182 and we will try to make it right to the best of our abilities.

WINTER HOURS:

Mondays 4pm – 8pm

Wednesdays 4pm – 8pm

Saturdays 10am -4pm

Venom Day – May 2nd, 2015

Scales and tails Utah will be hosting a Venom Day on Saturday May 2nd from 10-4pm with scheduled short presentations at specific times by local experts.

Topic will be:
– Venomous and poisonous animals,
– Utah laws and regulations,
– Misconceptions,
– Venom protocols,
– Bite/sting first aid, safety, etc.

Short presentations will be given by:

Jeremy Westerman of Scales & Tails Utah on scorpions, spiders, hymenopterans, and Gila monsters

This will be held for the general public and will be a FAMILY FRIENDLY event!

$3/child (3-12 years), 2 and under free

Includes regular admission to our Saturday Safari the same day to see the rest of our animals.

Spring is here is that means the Rattlesnakes are waking up too! Come learn about rattlesnakes and other venomous creatures found here in Utah! We will will also go over how to stay safe while hiking and playing in the mountains right outside our back door. Disclaimer: there will be no live rattlesnakes at this presentation only replicas.

April Workshop – “Reptile Myths & Legends”

How many of you have heard of the 49ft snake or the python that likes to sleep next to you so that it can “size” you up for dinner? In this workshop Scales & Tails’, Austin Earley, will be going over some of these myths and legends and let you know which ones are REAL and which ones are FAKE! We’ve got a couple of fun activities to show you how silly some of these ideas really are as well. This will be a lot of fun and we encourage you to bring some tall tales that you have heard to see if they are true or not!

Cro – o gator, Al-o-dile? How do you tell the difference? Crocodiles and Alligators look really similar so how do you tell the difference?  Come to this exciting workshop on crocodilians to find out! We’ll learn all about crocodiles and alligators, where they live, what they eat, and how they stalk their prey!  We’ll also get a chance to watch one of brave educators as they work one on one with Gatorade our biggest alligator.  You won’t want to miss this!

December Workshop – “Reptiles for Gifts”

Thinking about getting a pet lizard or snake for your child as a gift this holiday season?  Come to this workshop before you do!!  We’ll give you great ideas on what could make a great pet and what will not.

We’ll also go over:
– What is a good age for kids to get a pet reptile?
– What type of pet reptile fits each age group?
– What type of caging will you need before you bring home your pet?
– What kind of food will I need and how much?
and many more questions.  This will be a great workshop to get you prepped before you make that big decision. We’ll also hold a variety of pet reptiles so you can get an idea of what you would be getting into.  Space is limited, please RSVP.

Educational Programs

Scales and Tails Utah is excited to offer new educational programming for public and charter schools across the Wasatch Front! These presentations are connected to the Utah Core Educational Standards. Our educators will provide an interactive, hands-on approach to learning, and will connect students to amazing wildlife and ecosystems across the world.  Programs are 45 minutes long, and will feature live animals from our unique and diverse collection of reptiles, amphibians and birds.

 

The following presentations can be scheduled. Prices and contact information are listed below.

 

Elementary School

 

Packages:

1. Amazing Adaptations

-Learn about some fascinating characteristics that help animals survive in their environment.

2. Dinner Time

-What do animals eat, and how do they find their food? Find out with this presentation!

3. Utah Reptiles and Amphibians (not currently available)

-Utah is home to a unique variety of scaly and slimy animals. Will you recognize any of the reptiles and amphibians we share this home with?

4. Invaders!

-Environments are being invaded by species that do not belong. Learn why this is a problem and how it can be prevented.

 

Middle School

 

Packages:

1. Reproduction and Inherited Traits

-This presentation will teach students how animals find a mate, how they reproduce, and how traits are passed from parents to offspring.

2. Invasive Species

-Similar to the elementary school presentation, this program will offer a more in-depth look at invasive species and the mechanisms by which they spread.

3. Humans and Nature

-Humans have a dramatic impact on the environment, for better or worse. Learn about some of the different ways people have affected the world around      them.

 

High School

 

Packages:

1. Ecology

-Organisms interact with their environment in a variety of ways. This program will teach about these complex interactions and how plants and animals survive.

2. Animal Evolution

-Learn about the basics of natural selection, genetics, and heredity as it pertains to the rise of new species on the planet.

3. Classification and Taxonomy

-Students will learn about the hierarchical classification system put in place for organisms.

 

Pricing and Contact Information

 

Assembly Presentation

For one grade, up to 6 classes.

These presentations are designed to teach an entire grade level at once. They are less hands-on than the in-class presentations, but will teach the same Utah  Core Educational Standards based material.

Cost: $250

In-Class Presentations

Classes must be in the same grade, at the same location, and presentations must be on the same day.

The in-class presentations are very hands-on, and provide the best learning environment for our Utah Core Educational Standards based programming. Our educators will move from classroom to classroom.

Cost: $200 for the first presentation, $100 for each subsequent presentation.

 

These presentations are designed to teach a single grade level at a time.
